The Tugali War of Unification was a massive civil war in Tugal that took place between the city-states of Oporto Arawica and Gerrares and the city-states unified under Simbopolis in what was called "La Alianza de Simbopolis." The war effectively ended the Median Era, a time of prosperity and colony-born trade, having decimated every city-state except for Oporto Arawica. This left a power vacuum that Oporto Arawica used to solidify Tugal as a unified state under doge Karmykal Burradur, who would take on the name Aguas I.
Background[]
Pre-Median Era Tugal was a time where the unindustrialized city-states coexisted peacefully and collaborated amongst each other in relative harmony. However, the arrival of the very first shipment of the lindori gem from Silvermoon in Oporto Arawica piqued a new interest in trade. Demand for lindories, which were not only seen as a beauty for luxurious reasons but were also utilized in place of sharp or hard utensils because of their durability, skyrocketed in the region; however, as all lindories came from shipments overseas, the lindori gems arrived first in coastal city-states. The city-states of Oporto Arawica and Gerrares acted the most quickly, subjugating neighboring coastal city-states and setting up puppet governments so they could process all the gems for the worse so the suddenly great number of unemployed would be forced to go to Oporto Arawica or Gerrares to work in their factories.
Together, Oporto Arawica and Gerrares reached out overseas as the price of lindories began to dwindle in Tugal and the surrounding regions. Establishing fortalezas across the First Region, Oporto Arawica and Gerrares maximized their profits. Simbopolis, the most powerful inland city-state, attempted the same, setting up fortalezas to the north of Tugal on the Simbo River; however, their ventures were destroyed when locals of the north Simbo region reacted violently in the Horizontian War (these people united because of the war, becoming the Federation of Altadenica). As inland city-states grew poorer and more dependent on Oporto Arawica and Gerrares while Oporto Arawica and Gerrares grew exorbitantly richer, a rising resentment took hold in the region. Save Simbopolis, none of the inland city-states were powerful enough to challenge the coastal states.
Simbopolis turned their ventures southwards to Goba after the failure of their fortalezas in the north. They introduced the lindori into an already fragile economy; the actions of Simbopolian merchants in Goba ultimately disrupted the balance of power in the Gobalese Civil War, allowing the Uhlie mafia to rise to power. The head of the Uhlie mafia, Akytí'p Goldeä, cut off Simbopolian trade to the south in a violent and abrupt manner, leaving Simbopolis without an international trading partner; fearing a descent into poverty, Simbopolis rallied their surrounding city-states to pledge workers to factories in Simbopolis rather than those of Oporto Arawica and Gerrares, painting the coastal city-states as brutal and opportunistic villains. The propaganda campaign was successful, and seven city-states joined the original three aligned with Simbopolis. Oporto Arawica attempted to manipulate Simbopolis' economy to destroy its attempts to industrialize despite the heightened political tensions; deeply offended by this move, Simbopolis called for a united coalition that came to be called "La Alianza de Simbopolis" (Santandían: The Alliance from Simbopolis) and a mass draft to prepare for war against Oporto Arawica and Gerrares.
Onset of war[]
La Alianza made preemptive strikes, launching a series of terroristic bombings to startle the citizens of the two city-states and to demoralize their militaries. Additional privateering attacks on the Asturiana, Cachorro Velho, and Puente SAC also distracted Gerrares during a state-mandated period of mourning. La Alianza then divided a portion of their enlarged force into the Primeiro Army and the Arawdielli Army under (respectively) commanders Juana Allende Perúviana and João Getulio Feiras II. Perúviana marched on Gerrares while Feiras II marched on Oporto Arawica; meanwhile, a large force under Simbopolian chieftain Rio Torno remained and defended the Alianza's city-states.
Perúviana moved her army unnoticed up the Simbo River, using an extensive network of intelligence agents to suppress word of any information from leaking to Gerrares or Oporto Arawica. Her army was detected only after they had arrived at Gerrares' valleys; the bomb attacks in the previous weeks had weakened Gerrares' navies, which had been sent to Oporto Arawica to repair, leaving Gerrares comparatively undefended in the battle that came. Chieftain Jacob Paéz, who controlled the city, attempted to evacuate as many civilians as possible before the city's southern sections could be captured, but Perúviana was unyielding and ordered the slaughter of the thousands who attempted to leave the bombed-out city. Paéz escaped before the crackdown, and was then cut off from the city; Perúviana then razed Gerrares and took every person found in the city as a POW , selling many of them to slavers from the Milwaukee and Indianapolis Islands.
At the same time, Feiras II approached Oporto Arawica but was cut off in the Alianza city-state of Endorios; the Battle of Endoriosa Junction marked a stalemate that kept Feiras II from reaching Oporto Arawica before the city could erect defenses and mobilize its armies.
Height and end of war[]
When word reached Oporto Arawica of the genocides at Gerrares, the disgust felt by chief Karmykal Burradur of Oporto Arawica and many of his subjects galvanized them into a lust for revenge. Burradur's armies reached the inland city-state of Tyradias and slaughtered every civilian in the city-state in retaliation for what had happened at Gerrares; it happened again when the armies captured the city-state of Cidade Paixão and razed it.
Feiras II's stalemate with Burradur at Endoriosa Junction forced Feiras II backwards as he lost ground. Oportan soldiers slaughtered the people of Endorios city-state before chasing Feiras II and routing the Arawdielli Army at the Battle of Outer Simbopolis. A strong resistance from the defense force controlled by chief Torno pushed away Burradur and ultimately won the battle, routing the Oportan army marching on the city.
At the same time, Akytí'p Goldeä was able to solidify control over Tibakka in Goba; after the Cleansing massacre within the Uhlie mafia, dissent within the party became nonexistent and Goldeä sought to manipulate the Gobalese civilians into supporting his regime. To do this, he brainwashed his people into a hate for Tugal's trade policies and legitimized his government by striking out against Tugal to the cheers of his people. Goldeä marched an army up the Simbo River to the undefended southwestern side of the city of Simbopolis and captured the city, razing it and killing civilians and soldiers in the streets in the assault on Simbopolis. Goba then crushed Rio Torno's defensive army and brought Torno back to Tibakka for execution, leaving Simbopolis in ruins.
With their figurehead destroyed, La Alianza collapsed; the city-state of Dalação attempted to take lead, but its destruction in the Battle of Dalação quenched La Alianza completely. Oporto Arawica captured Simbopolis' charred ruins and occupied the Alianza city-states, facing off at the Battle of Ximinos with Perúviana and routing her force. With the mass devastation of every city-state except Oporto Arawica, the Oportans found themselves responsible for rebuilding all of Tugal. An end to the war was proclaimed.
Aftermath[]
Oporto Arawica chose to reconstruct Simbopolis in a gesture of goodwill, assigning the merchant Powel Santiaga to redesign the city and rebuild it effectively. Gerrares and most of the other city-state lay in ruins; several city-states, including Gerrares and Cidade Paixão, remain in ruins to present day. Oporto Arawica drastically reduced its aggressive economic behavior in relation to their fellow city-states and began to see themselves as the guardians and keepers of Tugal. Their active attempts to help rebuild Tugal after the war earned them the respect and support of most of their fellow city-states.
Oporto Arawica, in a public gesture that also garnered much support, issued the Oath of the Doge, which stated that Oporto Arawica would support Simbopolis in its ventures.
Karmykal Burradur was crowned the doge (the chosen monarchial elder of the nation) of what was, for the first time, considered the Unified Federation of Tugal. Taking on the name Aguas I, his family continued to rule over Tugal throughout the rest of its history to the present day.
